DLA Piper
Laura Scampion is a partner at DLA Piper specialising in multijurisdictional matters for employers based across the globe. She is a DLA Piper New Zealand Board member and leads the New Zealand employment practice group. Laura's more than 20 years' experience in employment and health and safety law spans both New Zealand and the United Kingdom. She has appeared before various courts and tribunals in both countries, acting for some of the largest companies, both locally and abroad.
As a partner in a global firm, Laura is able to impact the legal profession not just here in New Zealand but also internationally. She is a Trustee on the Board of DLA Piper’s Global Scholarships Programme, which assists law students in less developed countries to complete their studies in their home nation by financing study, offering world class training, and purchasing resources. Laura has had significant input into the programme's work across the globe but particularly in the South Pacific including the one-on-one mentoring of two law students based in the Soloman Islands.
Laura is committed to creating an environment where people can bring their authentic selves to work, all day, every day. She has been instrumental in changing the diversity and inclusion culture at DLA Piper in New Zealand. In 2018 she launched, alongside partner Reuben Woods, the Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee in New Zealand. DLA Piper now has five thriving D&I employee committees creating a platform for change throughout the firm and the profession. Laura also played an integral role in the New Zealand launch of Head Start, DLA Piper's social mobility programme. The programme supports talented young people who face barriers to entering the legal profession, offering internships, mentoring, and networking opportunities to help them realise their potential. It was Laura's passion and dedication toward social mobility that brought the programme to New Zealand. She believes a career in law should be an option for everyone, no matter how challenging your start in life.
Laura is also dedicated to championing women in leadership throughout New Zealand and globally. She was recently elected as a Global Women member, an organisation with a mission to catalyse New Zealand’s social and economic success by championing diversity in leadership. Global women members are seen as women who are change makers and leaders with a thirst to make a difference, recognised for their ability to influence and impact, advocate for diversity, equality, and leadership.
