Australian law firms unite for annual moot

Ashurst, Allens, North Quarter Lane Chambers and the Indigenous Lawyers Association of Queensland have once again united to offer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law students the opportunity work with top Queensland lawyers, barristers and judges.

The annual students’ moot will see 10 students, representing the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, Griffith University and Bond University, compete at the Federal Court in Brisbane this Friday, 3 August.

The students have spent months being mentored by lawyers and barristers.
Ashurst partner and moot coordinator Tony Denholder says that as well as benefitting the students, the firm also gains.

"Our team has been involved since the first Moot in 2015 and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the students each year. We have kept in touch with many of the students and have been very lucky that some of the former mooters have chosen to join Ashurst to commence their legal careers," he said.

Allens partner and moot coordinator John Hedge added: 'Hands-on experience provides a critical foundation for a career in law, but that advantage is not always readily accessible to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, who may lack the connections and opportunities of their fellow students.”

Sydney, Perth among strongest revenue for HFW

Global law firm HFW has increased its annual revenue by 8% in the financial year 2017/18.

Its revenue increased to GBP £179.1 million while profit per equity partner was up 2% to £542,000. It means revenues are up more than 25% over the past two financial years.

Sydney and Perth were among the firm’s international locations to post increased revenue of more than 20% and the London-headquartered firm’s international locations now make up 60% of total turnover.
