Copeland Ashcroft has welcomed former Cavell Leitch immigration team head Shi Sheng Cai as a new senior associate, bolstering Copeland Ashcroft’s national immigration practice.

Cai specialises in immigration law and has over seven years of experience in the field. He is knowledgeable in matters involving global mobility, corporate immigration, and investor migration. He is also an expert in issues related to complex areas of New Zealand immigration.

“We are seeing more and more clients looking to develop a migrant employee strategy and simplify immigration processes to allow this to work successfully – [Cai’s] appointment is timely to support this, especially with his pragmatic approach and depth of experience,” said Copeland Ashcroft partner Kate Ashcroft.

He recently helped employers develop systems and processes that streamlined the process of securing visas for cohorts of about 20-150 migrant staff. He also assisted in obtaining resident visas for high-net-worth individuals and their families under the Active Investor Plus category, and helped an individual who had been deported from the US to secure a work visa via special direction.

Cai is part of the Law Association Immigration Committee and is presently an author for the Thomson Reuters Human Rights Law resource. He is currently based in Christchurch but will relocate to Auckland in early 2024.
