Global firm is playing the long game on expansion
DLA Piper has added an office in Peru in collaboration with a local firm and is considering opening in Argentina, but the firm is not looking for short-term results in the Latin American market.
The global law firm also has a Puerto Rico office but Roger Meltzer, the firm’s manager in the Americas says that while the island has difficulties, he is optimistic about its future.
"I'm not a short-term investor, I am a long-term investor, and (that) has many ways of looking at a legal firm. Having the reach and size of this firm gives us the power to invest in the long term," said Meltzer.
Meanwhile, DLA Piper’s emeritus partner and former US senator George Mitchell, added that President Trump’s administration is not likely to reverse the global trends that have opened up trade and the legal profession globally.
"It is our interest to be a reflection of the society of which we are part. By nature, we are a global company, we operate in over 30 countries across the globe and we anticipate that the future will be very similar to the past in what has to do with the continuing trend towards cross-border trade, but that trend is not unbreakable," Mitchell said.
