HFW urges staff to champion sustainability through year-long global challenge

HFW is encouraging its staff to champion sustainability through the introduction of a 12 month-long global challenge.

The firm announced that it has adopted the use of a special software platform that will enable staff across its offices to “record climate positive lifestyle changes and measure the impact to their individual carbon footprint.”

“At HFW, we see sustainability as being critical to the future success of our business. We all have the ability – and responsibility – to help drive meaningful positive change across our communities. That's the idea behind this challenge: it's a way for us all to come together and contribute to a common goal,” said Giles Kavanagh, who was named HFW’s inaugural sustainability partner in April.

The platform lists various activities along with their corresponding carbon values. “Challenges” staff may tackle include simple initiatives like choosing to air-dry laundry instead of using a clothes dryer, or choosing to shut off the tap when necessary while doing the dishes.

Staff may also take on more significant tasks like going vegetarian or eliminating the use of single-use plastics from their lives.

Using either the software platform or a mobile app, staff can measure their progress in challenges and record activities in which they have partaken. HFW allows staff to engage in as many sustainability-friendly activities as they like.

Staff will earn points for each challenge completed, and every month, prizes will be given out to those who log the most points and recorded the highest level of carbon savings among the pack.

“Some of the challenges may seem small and insignificant, but these simple, everyday changes all add up and can make a real difference,” Kavanagh explained. “And the great thing about the software platform is that it allows us all to see in very real terms the actual impact that our actions are having.”

The launch of the challenge is in line with the firm’s new sustainability strategy, which is founded on the three core pillars of clients, environment and people and projects.
