A mentorship program has been launched by Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa
Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa, the New Zealand Māori Law Society (Hunga Rōia), has launched the Ngā Wāhine Rōia Māori mentoring program at Parliament.
Attending the launch last week were Kiritapu Allan MP, Māori Land Court and Waitangi Tribunal Judge Sarah Reeves, the Crown Law Office’s Bernadette Arapere and the Ministry for the Environment’s Marcia Murray.
The program, which champions the advancement of Māori women members of the Law Society, has at least 68 sign-ups, the New Zealand Law Society (NZLS) said. The program includes preparation and support of lawyers and senior law students and the establishment of mentoring networks.
“Based on the information shared in the application forms, mentors have been matched with mentees with similar values and career aspirations,” Marcia Murray, Te Hunga Rōia’s Wellington representative, told the NZLS.
“Given the vast spread of mentors and mentees across the country, with the help of technology, they are able to stay connected. We encourage pairs to have at least four kanohi-ki-te-kanohi hui [face-to-face meetings], which can take place over skype or zoom, regular coffee catch ups, or at other events during the year, such as the Te Hunga Rōia Māori kura reo Māori in July or the hui-a-tau [annual conference] in October,” she said.
