Duncan Cotterill has elevated four lawyers to the senior associate and associate roles in a recent promotions round.
Katy Stove is the firm’s newest senior associate, while Dana Beissel, Elliot Foxall and Salena Naran join the roster of associates. They operate from the firm’s Wellington and Auckland offices.
Wellington-based Stove is a specialist in IP, consumer and marketing law. In particular, she has considerable experience when it comes to the management of both national and international trademark portfolios, risk strategy associated with the launch of new brands and matters involving the commercialisation, transfer and enforcement of trademark rights.

She has handled contentious and non-contentious IP matters like copyright infringement, domain name ownership, designs and brand protection. Her clients include local and international trademark owners in the fashion, tech, cosmetics and personal care goods, F&B, household consumer goods, pharmaceutical/nutraceutical and agribusiness industries.
Stove possesses a wealth of knowledge on issues related to the Fair Trading Act, regulation and compliance with the Food Standards Codes, and compliance with the Advertising Standards Code. She also has a special interest in media law.
Beissel is a commercial litigator working from Auckland. She has advised on various disputes related to property, construction, insurance, professional liability, medico-legal, debt recovery, insolvency and company law.
She has played roles in high-value, complex commercial disputes, the firm said. She has appeared in court and before specialist tribunals as a counsel, and often guides expert witnesses on technical aspects.
Beissel has also guided companies, business owners, insurers and insureds through negotiations and helped to resolve disputes through alternative methods.
Foxall specialises in public and commercial law. He frequently advises on public and administrative law issues, and focuses on regulatory compliance, investigations and prosecutions.
He also guides clients through competition concerns resulting from M&A transactions or agreements for the purposes of the Commerce Act 1986, Duncan Cotterill said. He has also handled conduct and contracts matters under the Fair Trading Act 1986, and taken on cases related to the the Privacy Act 2020 and the Official Information Act 1982.
Foxall seconded at the central government and spent some time with the in-house legal team at the Medical Council of New Zealand. He operates from Duncan Cotterill’s Wellington branch.
Naran focuses on IP, tech, privacy and consumer law. She works with clients from the financial services, media and broadcasting, FMCG, technology, sports, aged care and public sectors.
She advises on strategic technology procurement, development and licensing arrangements, helping clients to protect their businesses while staying on top of innovations. She has significant experience gained from her stints with major global firms and with the in-house legal departments at the Guardian News and Media and Global Media (UK).
Duncan Cotterill also promoted Pip Glasson to senior registered legal executive. She primarily works in the property and banking and finance areas, and has over a decade of experience under her belt.
