NZ Lawyer talks to the global firm's newest banking and finance expert
One of NZ Lawyer’s Rising Stars for 2021 has joined the partnership at DLA Piper.
Rachel Brown will operate from the firm’s Auckland office alongside fellow partner Michael Thompson. She brings to the table significant experience in banking and finance.
Brown said that she was excited to be joining the firm during “such a transformational time in the sector. The firm has a great culture, and we are very much invested in growing our banking and finance offering and developing new solutions that reflect changing market needs.”
“Having worked offshore for several years, the global reach of DLA Piper was a strong drawcard. There is an increased demand in New Zealand for global legal expertise and I’m looking forward to working with clients both here and abroad,” she told NZ Lawyer.
Brown is an expert in corporate, property, acquisition and project finance matters, and also has considerable knowledge when it comes to restructuring and insolvency issues. She has acted for banks and borrowers in various sectors and across several jurisdictions.
While she kicked off her legal career in New Zealand, Brown went to glean much experience from a stint in London working with a global firm, where she said she learned to “commit, be courageous, and grab every opportunity that comes your way.”
In addition to being named a Rising Star, Brown has been ranked in the Legal 500 Asia Pacific.
DLA Piper said that clients have commended Brown for her approachability and ability to offer “sound legal advice in plain English.” DLA Piper New Zealand managing partner Martin Wiseman also cited Brown’s commitment to service delivery as an important asset to the partnership.

With Brown’s inclusion, women now comprise 45% of DLA Piper New Zealand’s partnership, cementing the firm’s position as a market leader in the area of diversity and inclusion among the country’s large law firms.
Rachel's ability to effectively juggle her work with being a mother to her two children is also serving as an example of how lawyers can balance work and home life well. “Success is about being prepared. What makes you more prepared than raising two children? Having a family and a career requires commitment on both fronts but ultimately is rewarding. Children keep you grounded. DLA Piper has taken great steps towards flexible working which really helps,” Brown said.
When asked about her outlook for 2021, Brown said that “the [COVID-19] pandemic has brought climate change and the transition to a sustainable economy into sharp focus for 2021.”
"Advances in technology and Generation Z are also bringing about rapid and unprecedented change. Firms will need to be nimble and ready to address these challenges and opportunities.”
