Transaction worth $64m will include investment into electric vehicle charging business

Genesis Energy, advised by Bell Gully, to acquire 65% stake in ChargeNet

Bell Gully has shared that it is assisting Genesis Energy on its proposed investment for a majority equity stake in ChargeNet, a New Zealand-based provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions and infrastructure.

Chris Hodges, corporate partner at Bell Gully, is leading the deal team advising Genesis Energy, an energy solutions company. Asaph Verner, corporate associate, is assisting Hodges.

Specifically, Genesis Energy seeks to acquire a 65% stake in ChargeNet for $64m, which will include a significant investment into the business to help fund its near-term growth. With this proposed transaction, Genesis Energy aims to position itself as a key investor in the growth of New Zealand’s EV market and its energy transition.

Genesis Energy and ChargeNet seek to expand the country’s charging infrastructure and to integrate advanced energy solutions with the goal of making the adoption of EVs more accessible and convenient for all New Zealanders, said Bell Gully’s press release.

Hodges expressed enthusiasm in Bell Gully’s role of supporting Genesis Energy on this investment.

“The electrification of transport will continue to play an important part in New Zealand’s energy transition, and our team appreciates the opportunity to be involved through this transaction,” said Hodges in Bell Gully’s press release.

Hodges, based in Auckland, has experience covering a broad range of corporate transactions, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions and capital markets, according to his biography on the firm’s website.

He works on takeovers, joint ventures, corporate governance and advisory matters, and equity and debt capital markets, his firm bio states. Across a wide range of industries, he has advised corporate clients and large financial institutions.

For four years, Hodges worked in the London office of Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, an international firm headquartered in New York, U.S.​​ He then came back to Bell Gully in 2017, as per his bio.

On the other hand, Verner has assisted domestic and international clients alike on corporate transactions across various industries and sectors, according to Verner’s LinkedIn page. Verner’s work has involved M&A transactions, private equity, joint venture arrangements, strategic investments, capital raising, and venture capital transactions.
