Baker & McKenzie claims a world first
Baker & McKenzie has become the first law firm to commit to the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition, a partnership of the World Bank, IMF, governments, non-profits and corporates.

The global law firm will actively support clients in advancing carbon pricing policies and will share best practice throughout its international locations.

The ultimate aim of the coalition is a carbon price applied throughout the global economy and it has welcomed the joining of Baker & McKenzie as the first representative from the legal profession.

Martijn Wilder AM, head of Baker & McKenzie’s Global Environmental Markets and Climate Change practice said that the firm’s involvement is in tune with clients who are increasingly facing greater pressures on environmental compliance.

Clifford Chance is latest to represent Murdoch firm over phone hacking
Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers has changed law firms again as it continues its defense of phone hacking charges by the media mogul’s UK business.

Clifford Chance has been instructed by the firm to take over from Linklaters, which took over from Olswang which took over from Farrers according to Private Eye.

In 2011, Murdoch’s younger son James, now chair of 21st Century Fox, appointed Clifford Chance’s head of the global Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice to represent him personally as he distanced himself from the phone-hacking scandal.

News Group Newspapers has already dealt with more than 1,000 cases brought against its now-defunct News of the World over claims that its journalists hacked voicemails.

QC suspended from child sex abuse scandal
The lawyer leading an inquiry into historic child sex abuse allegations has been suspended with media reports of a breakdown of relations with the inquiry’s chairman.

Claims by news organizations that Ben Emmerson QC of Matrix Chambers was suspended after disagreeing with the future direction of the investigation have been dismissed by the Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse.

In a statement, the Inquiry said: "The Inquiry has recently become very concerned about aspects of Mr Emmerson's leadership of the Counsel Team. He has therefore been suspended from duty so that these can be properly investigated.
