Baker McKenzie pitches in on Sydney's first wave park

Baker McKenzie has pitched in on the development of Sydney’s first wave park by advising URBNSURF.

URBNSURF Sydney will be situated 13km west of Sydney's CBD at Sydney Olympic Park. Its launch follows the establishment of the country’s first-ever wave park in Melbourne in 2020.

Baker McKenzie construction head Emanuel Confos had been attached to the project for a number of years.

"I was first approached to assist at the inception of the project several years back, along with Joshua Hayes Associated, when we prepared and negotiated the construction contract with the civil contractor, the main works contractor and the equipment supplier”, Confos said.

Following the build, Baker McKenzie's head of real estate Sebastian Busa and special counsel Kerrie Duong confirmed that they assisted in “structuring of [URBNSURF’s] licensing and leasing arrangements with Sydney Olympic Park Authority (as head landlord) and its subtenants, as part of a change to the completion stages of the wave park in Sydney”.

“This strategic advice involved extensive negotiations with all parties in respect of these arrangements and ultimately assisted URBNSURF in successfully opening the park in May 2024”, Busa and Duong said.

URBNSURF’s Melbourne wave park counts Olympic squad athletes among its visitors.
