Congresswoman introduces articles of impeachment against US Supreme Court justices

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) introduced articles of impeachment against United States Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, citing ethics violations and conflicts of interest.

The first impeachment resolution against Justice Thomas addresses his failure to disclose financial income, gifts, and reimbursements. Additionally, it questions Thomas’s refusal to recuse himself from cases involving his spouse’s legal and economic interests. Specifically, Thomas accepted travel and lodging from GOP donor Harlan Crow and attended donor events for a libertarian political organization founded by the Koch brothers. The resolution also highlights evidence suggesting that Thomas’s wife participated in efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

The second impeachment resolution against Justice Alito focuses on his refusal to recuse himself from cases where he may have had personal bias or prejudice. This bias was indicated by Alito allowing an "appeal to heaven flag" and an upside-down American flag to be flown outside his residence.

Representative Ocasio-Cortez stated, "Justice Thomas and Alito’s repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law. These failures alone would amount to a profound transgression worthy of standard removal in any lower court and would disqualify any nominee to the highest court from confirmation in the first place."

Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “The unchecked corruption crisis on the Supreme Court has now spiraled into a Constitutional crisis threatening American democracy writ large. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito’s pattern of refusal to recuse from consequential matters before the court in which they hold widely documented financial and personal entanglements constitutes a grave threat to American rule of law, the integrity of our democracy, and one of the clearest cases for which the tool of impeachment was designed.”
