DLA Piper merges with Dimock Stratton in Canada

The merger is the second Canadian merger the UK-headquartered firm will execute in 18 months.

DLA Piper will be merging with Canadian law firm Dimock Stratton LLP in the London-headquartered firm’s second merger in the country in 18 months.

Sixteen lawyers from the intellectual property specialist law firm will join DLA Piper’s office in Toronto effective 1 November, 2016.

In April last year, DLA Piper merged with Davis LLP, a law firm which had seven offices and more than 50 practices, to form DLA Piper (Canada) LLP.

“We are excited to build on our successful entrance into Canada with this combination,” said Roger Meltzer, global co-chair and co-chair (Americas) of DLA Piper.

“This key market continues to generate a wealth of new opportunities, and with intellectual property and technology law standing at the core of so many major business transactions across sectors, this is an important step to boost our competitive edge and execute our growth strategy.”

“It has always been our goal to stay ahead of the curve in Canada’s globalizing legal and business landscape, and we seize every opportunity to deepen our capabilities to serve our clients,” said Robert Seidel, Q.C., Canada Managing Partner.

“It is a tremendous growth opportunity to be joining forces with an industry heavyweight such as Dimock Stratton, which has been involved in many influential cases in patent, trade-mark and copyright law in Canada. We are excited for what this combination will achieve for our clients.”

“We are thrilled to bring our team of nationally recognized practitioners to the DLA Piper brand,” said Ron Dimock, co-founding partner of Dimock Stratton.

“The multi-jurisdictional reach and vast network of resources of DLA Piper’s global platform will give our clients a significant advantage in meeting their IP objectives and protecting their investments.”

The merger follows the recent announcement that fellow global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright will acquire Vancouver firm Bull Housser & Tupper.
