The newly appointed judge will take over from her husband, the High Court of Australia has announced.
Federal Court judge the Honourable Michelle Marjorie Gordon has been named the next Justice of the High Court of Australia, coincidentally taking over from her husband, the Honourable Justice Kenneth Hayne AC, who will reach the statutory retirement on in June this year.
Justice Gordon will be the 52
nd Justice and the fifth female justice to sit on the High Court bench.
Attorney-General
George Brandis said that Justice Gordon has “had a distinguished career, both at the bar and on the bench”.
Turning 51 this year, Justice Gordon will be able to serve on the High Court for 19 years.
"Justice Gordon was appointed to the
Federal Court of Australia in April 2007. The contribution Her Honour has made to the development of the law, particularly in commercial law, is widely recognised by her colleagues on the Bench and at the Bar," Senator Brandis said in a statement.
After studying in Perth, she worked at Robinson Cox (now
Clayton Utz), moving to Melbourne practice Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks (now
Allens) in 1988. Working in commercial litigation and appointed senior associate at the firm in 1992, she was called to the Victorian Bar later that year, establishing a practice specialising in commercial law, trade practices and taxation. In 2003, Her Honour took silk after only 11 years.
Justice Gordon will be sworn in on the 9 June.
