Leanne Liddle consulted with over 150 Aboriginal communities in the state
Almost 90% of the prisoners and a significant majority of detained youth come from the Aboriginal community – this was the problem Leanne Liddle saw when she took on the task of advocating for justice initiatives in the Top End.
As director of the Aboriginal Justice Unit for the NT government’s Department of the Attorney-General and Justice, Liddle has helmed an expert reference group working with Aboriginal organisations. She consulted with 160 Aboriginal communities in the state in her push for greater diversity in justice policy-related decision-making.
Liddle played a role in launching a seven-year agreement to cut down the reoffending and imprisonment rates of Aboriginal Territorians, to back Aboriginal leadership, and to bolster judicial response – the NT’s inaugural Aboriginal Justice Agreement.
“Her leadership has ensured that the justice sector includes the standpoints of Aboriginal people. Within her own Aboriginal Justice Unit, she has consistently employed and mentored Aboriginal staff and created cultural safety within her team,” said a spokesperson from Liddle’s office.
Australasian Lawyer named Liddle among its Elite Women in 2021.
