Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has launched a new education program for start-ups in Melbourne.
Called the “Herbert Smith Freehills Startup School,” the program is a six-part series of workshops run by the firm’s lawyers and their peers who advise start-ups, including experts from Greenwoods + Herbert Smith Freehills, Edgelabs, rampersand, Lux Group, Cannings, and Zeus Consulting.
In addition to educating founders on key legal risks, the program also teaches legal triage skills. The workshops’ topics include e-commerce and intellectual property; tax structuring and employee stock ownership plans; employees and contractors; contracting and commercialisation; enabling investment; and strategic communications. The workshops facilitate the exchanges of ideas, lessons, and experiences between the founders, lawyers, and other experts involved in the program.
HSF is taking its expertise gained from advising some of Australia’s most successful start-ups – including Atlassian, Campaign Monitor, Safety Culture, and Buckitdream – and paying it forward, said Kate Carlile, HSF executive counsel.
“Now we’ve partnered with some leading names in the sector to share our expertise and network with the next generation of Aussie entrepreneurs,” she said. “Australia’s young and vibrant culture offers fertile ground for entrepreneurs to capitalise on their bold vision.”
The first workshop was held on 30 October. The rest of the sessions are scheduled over the coming weeks to 5 December, and the program is expected to run again next year.
