The Australian Human Rights Commission wants lawyers to make nominations for the 2017 Human Rights Awards.
“We all know someone, or perhaps a business or organisation, that deserves to be recognised for their inspiring work; for their devotion to making Australia a better place and their commitment to ensuring our rights and freedoms are enjoyed by all, on an equal basis,” HRC President Rosalind Croucher AM said in a statement sent to Australasian Lawyer.
“Although I’m only a few days into my role as president of the Australian Human Rights Commission, I’m looking forward to finding out about the great human rights work that you, and others you know, are doing,” she said.
The emeritus professor, who was formerly the president of the Australian Law Reform Council,
began her seven-year term at the end of July, succeeding fellow academic Gillian Triggs.
Last year’s Human Rights Law Award winner was Anna Cody, director of Kingsford Legal Centre, who was recognised for her high-quality case work for thousands of disadvantaged people, as well as advocating for law reform to address systemic human rights breaches.
Human Rights Medal category winners include Pat Anderson, Peter Greste, Eddie Mabo, Rt Hon Malcolm Fraser, Ian Thorpe, Jeremy Jones, Professor Fred Hollows, Sister Clare Condon, and Dorothy Hoddinott.
The awards are given under eight categories, which are:
- Human Rights Medal
- Young People’s Human Rights Medal
- Business Award
- Racism. It Stops With Me Award
- Media Award
- Tony Fitzgerald Memorial Community Individual Award
- Community Organisation Award
- Law Award
Nominations close for all eight categories on Monday. Details and nomination forms are at
