King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) has partnered with Walanga Muru, Macquarie University’s Office of Indigenous Strategy, to launch a mentoring program for indigenous law students.
The program, which has just commenced in the university, initially supports four law students at Macquarie University. Each of these students will be guided by two mentors, a junior and a senior lawyer, who will provide insight into life as a legal professional.
KWM is hoping to expand the program next year through partnerships with other universities.
Kellie Wade, KWM’s national diversity manager, said the program reflects the firm’s support of diversity in the legal sector, a cause also championed by Macquarie University.
“As a firm we are passionate about creating opportunities which generate diversity of thought. This mentoring program aligns strongly with our inclusion agenda and the commitments made in our reconciliation action plan,” she said. “It will provide indigenous students with practical advice and assistance during their studies which in turn will help to set them up for a successful and positive career in law.”
