Law Society of Scotland warns of ongoing email scam

The Law Society of Scotland is warning lawyers that scammers are using the organisation’s name in sham emails.

“We have been informed of scam emails claiming to be from 'Law Society' sent out to solicitors and law firms with PDF downloads,” the Law Society cautioned in an announcement.

The emails typically have the subject line “Important Information” and claim that the Law Society has been trying to reach the recipient, it said.

In an example email posted by the Law Society, the message referred to an “urgent matter” that the receiver needs to address, without going into specifics. “Kindly review and get back to us as soon as possible,” the email, which is signed “LAW SOCIETY,” said.

“The 'from' email address is not a Law Society of Scotland email address,” the Law Society said.

Lawyers who suspect fraud or other internet crimes are encouraged to report the incident to ActionFraud, the UK’s national fraud and cyber-crime reporting centre. In cases when actual fraud has happened, the matter should be reported directly to Police Scotland, the Law Society said.
