A new special counsel joins its growing Sydney base

Doubling down on legal innovation, lexvoco has just announced the appointment of a senior lawyer in Sydney.
Justin Moses has been appointed special counsel – legal operations by the NewLaw firm. The lexvoco legal operations and innovation teams are responsible for problem solving and crafting recommended plans for change.
He previously held senior roles at the Westpac legal team, including being head of knowledge and development.
“The traditional law firm is evolving rapidly in response to new imperatives,” Moses said of his move to lexvoco. “Everything about lexvoco reflects imagination and boldness, but with a complementary focus on simplicity and sustainability. And they are leading ‘new law’ firms in taking a holistic perspective to helping in-house lawyers –from on hand resourcing and law firm services through to legal operation reviews and legal tech product solutions.”
Miriam Rihani, lexvoco principal, said that innovation starts with culture, which makes people feel empowered to think differently, allows people to challenge each other, and give people the time and headspace to think creatively.
“We've got no dress code, no requirement to be in our offices, no set hours and no billable hour targets. Seven out of 11 of our leadership team, five out of nine principals and 58% of our staff are female. One of our three owners is a 28-year-old female. Anyone can succeed, no matter their gender, age or background,” she said.
But a creative environment alone does not lead to a successful firm, she said.
“For an initiative to be labelled ‘innovative,’ there has to be commercial outcomes, otherwise it’s not innovation, it’s just art,” she said.
“Creativity is just one part of the innovation equation. The other crucial input is insight and this requires research, data and analysis. Justin Moses gets this – it was the foundation for his role at Westpac and it’s why we are excited to have him join us,” she said.
