Mariotti has advised clients on internal investigations and developing internal compliance programs
Paul Hastings LLP announced the addition of former federal prosecutor and trial lawyer Renato Mariotti as a partner in the firm's Chicago office.
Renato Mariotti specializes in various intricate legal matters, including private equity and hedge fund litigation, derivative-related claims, and cyber theft. His expertise extends to digital assets and cryptocurrency, governmental inquiries, enforcement actions, director and officer liability, whistleblower allegations, board governance and oversight, and internal controls. Mariotti's practice includes advising clients on internal investigations and developing internal compliance programs.
“Renato is a highly-accomplished litigator whose extensive government and private practice experience will further elevate our premier litigation practice and our capabilities in the digital asset space,” said Frank Lopez, chair of Paul Hastings. “His arrival reflects our ongoing commitment to attract talent that provides clients with the top-tier service they need to address their most critical and complex matters and gain additional market share in the investigations and white-collar area.”
Mariotti, who previously served as a prosecutor in the Securities and Commodities Fraud Section of the US Attorney's Office, led the prosecution in United States v. Michael Coscia, the first federal prosecution of a high-frequency trader for order entry and the first under the anti-spoofing provision of the Dodd-Frank Act. He has tried and won more than 20 civil and criminal cases in federal and state courts, including United States v. Jitesh Thakkar, the first criminal case charging a non-trader with market manipulation.
“The opportunity to bring Paul Hastings’ robust capabilities to my clients and to collaborate with the firm’s incredible roster of talent was one I couldn’t pass up,” said Mariotti. “The global reach and strength of the Paul Hastings platform across practices is undeniable.”
Mariotti joins from Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP, where he represented hospitals, pharmacies, and providers in enforcement matters involving civil False Claims Act litigation and parallel criminal investigations, the Anti-Kickback Statute and Stark Law, and health care fraud.
Renato Mariotti is the latest addition to Paul Hastings' team of litigators, joining a group that includes data and cybersecurity expert Michelle Reed, trial and regulatory enforcement lawyer Manuel Berrelez, a 12-lawyer white-collar team led by Antonin Lévy, a six-partner IP team, white-collar partners Stuart Alford KC and Adam Fee, and several other prominent litigators across key practice areas and locations including London, Palo Alto, Washington, DC, Century City, Dallas, Chicago, and New York.
