Prominent barrister Ross Ray, QC, killed

Melbourne barrister Ross Ray was killed in a quad bike accident at his hobby farm near Mansfield yesterday.

The former Law Council of Australia president and Chair of the Victorian Bar was found pinned under a quad bike at the property in Merrijig by police and ambulance offers just after 12:30pm.

According to a report by the Sydney Morning Herald, a police spokesperson said a report would be prepared for the Coroner and that WorkSafe Victoria would investigate the accident.

Ray, who was in his 60s, appeared before several Royal Commissions and worked as a prosecutor on behalf of WorkSafe Victoria in its case against Essendon Football Club’s supplements program.

The rising number of deaths associated with quad bike accidents on properties has prompted calls for mandatory licensing, specialised training, other safety measures and bans for children under the age of 16.  Deaths associated with quad bikes or all-terrain vehicles accounted for 40% of all farm deaths last year, a total of 15 people were killed while using quad bikes..
