Sony Music inks deal to acquire Tame Impala's music catalogue with help from Allens

Allens has provided legal advice to Sony Music Publishing as it acquires the music catalogue of Australian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker, also known as Tame Impala.

The firm’s team helped with the transaction documents for acquiring the rights to a music catalogue that includes songs written for Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Mick Jagger, Gorillaz, Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Travis Scott and Kali Uchis. The team also assisted with a new publishing deal for future albums by Parker.

This builds on Sony Music Publishing's long-established partnership with Parker.

“Kevin is a singular talent whose creativity and dedication to his art has enthralled fans and artists since he arrived on the music scene. Having worked with Kevin since before the release of the first Tame Impala album, it has been thrilling to witness his rise to success worldwide, which is so well deserved. We are proud and humbled to be taking custodianship of this iconic catalogue of songs and to be continuing our relationship with Kevin in this exciting phase of his music making career”, said Damian Trotter, managing director of Sony Music Publishing Australia.

Media Arts Lawyers partner David Vodicka acted for Parker. Meanwhile, the Allens team consisted of partners Miriam Stiel and Tracy Lu and senior associate Max Jones (IP); also pitching in were partner Dominic Anderson and senior associate Alex Knights (corporate), as well as tax partner Tom Tian.

"It was a real privilege to work with Damian and the rest of the Sony Music Publishing Australia team on this significant deal for the business, and we look forward to continuing to play our role in supporting the Australian music industry through our relationship with Sony Music Publishing Australia", Lu said.
