Herbert Smith Freehills’ regional managing partner for Asia and Australia has been picked by the International Chamber of Commerce as an alternate member for Hong Kong of the International Court of Arbitration.
Justin D’Agostino, who’s also the global head of the firm’s dispute resolution group, will be serving at the court from 1 July, after being appointed by the ICC’s World Council at its latest meeting.
“I am honoured to have been appointed as an alternate member for Hong Kong of the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC,” D’Agostino said. “The importance of arbitration to the fair and efficient resolution of disputes increases year on year.”
D’Agostino is well-known for his international arbitration expertise. He appears before tribunals around the world, advises on arbitration-related court proceedings, sits as an arbitrator, and advises on the protection of foreign investments under international law, the firm said.
The Hong Kong-based partner is a visiting professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, and was a member of the sub-committee of the Law Reform Commission of Hong Kong, which reviewed the Third Party Funding in Arbitration law.
D’Agostino, who was named in 2013 as one of the leading “OUTstanding Executives” by the Financial Times, is also an advocate for LGBT rights. He is also a member of the steering committee working to promote the Pledge for Equal Representation in Arbitration, which aims to solve the under-representation of women on international arbitral tribunals.
