Top firm patents cloud-based OCR technology for new service

The new technology cuts processing time in half and costs half of existing outsourcing options

Top firm patents cloud-based OCR technology for new service
Corrs Chambers Westgarth has patented a new optical character recognition (OCR) analysis technology for a new cloud-based service it is launching.

The technology, which identifies low-quality sections of text, will be integrated into a new service being launched by Corrs called JustOCR. The cloud-based service is 50% faster than standard OCR processing, and 50% cheaper than existing OCR outsourcing options, the firm said.

Graeme Grovum, the firm’s head of innovation, said that the service is unlike existing OCR services that typically require a choice of speed versus cost.

“It can usually take a week or more to recognise 1.5 million pages and cost clients anywhere between 2 to 4 cents per page. While that might not seem like much, the cost of outsourced OCR is prohibitive for large matters with millions of pages. JustOCR is able to OCR and analyse 1.5 million documents in just a few hours and at about half the price of the industry’s lowest rates,” he said.

The newly patented technology will power OCR analysis that’s being offered to users at no additional cost, the firm said. Using the add-on functionality, processed text will be given a quality score that users can utilise to identify gaps in documentation.

“OCR technology was a huge leap forward for the legal industry, particularly in litigation cases. Our new OCR analysis feature is the next step up, providing users with a significant strategic advantage in ascertaining where the gaps are in their own and other parties’ document collections,” said James Whittaker, Corrs partner.

The technology, which was developed by the firm’s innovation and development team, is currently in closed beta. However, the firm will soon accept applications from existing and non-clients to trial the new service.
