A UK-headquartered international firm has hired the former Asia Pacific corporate practice head of a US BigLaw outfit.
Mabel Lui becomes the head of the Greater China commercial practice at Withers, bringing with her an 11-strong team from Chicago-headquartered firm Winston & Strawn. Lui joined Winston & Strawn in 2014 from
DLA Piper, where she was head of corporate for Asia and played a key role in the firm’s Greater China expansion.
Lui specialises in mergers and acquisitions, investment, capital markets, real estate, and private wealth-management matters. Fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin Chinese, she is qualified in Hong Kong; England and Wales; New York; Victoria, Australia; and Singapore.
Also part of the team that moved to Withers are two partners, Polly Chu and Daniel Tang. The team also includes four associates, three paralegals, and other support staff.
Chu is an expert in corporate real estate matters, including M&A and real estate transactions including acquisition finance, bank finance, leasing and management, wealth planning, and probate and estate work.
Tang specialises in cross-border M&A, joint ventures, private equity, venture capital, and corporate and commercial work related to mainland China and Hong Kong investment.
The other members of the team are associate and private client specialist Deirdre Fu; associates David Cheng and Kathy Ku; trainee Bobby Fung; and paralegals Quinncy Wu, Mei Ching Yeung, and Lana Yuen.
The move comes after Withers’ former chairman, Anthony Indaimo,
relocated to Singapore in January to lead in the firm’s increased focus on cross-border M&A in the Asia Pacific region as the head of the firm’s international corporate practice in Asia.
Withers has more than 160 partners and more than 450 other lawyers working out of 18 offices worldwide. It has offices in Hong Kong, Melbourne, Singapore, and Sydney.
