Macpherson Kelley makes senior appointments: Brad Marland, James Lovel, Thomas Abraham

Macpherson Kelley has announced the expansion of its national team through three appointments to senior positions in the practice areas of property, litigation, and tax: principal lawyer Brad Marland and special counsel James Lovel and Thomas Abraham.

“Not only in experience, but also a shared understanding of the firm’s values, which makes them a perfect fit for Macpherson Kelley,” Guenther added in the firm’s news release.

Marland has joined the Brisbane property team. He practises in the areas of commercial, industrial, and retail property law. Specifically, his work has covered real estate funds, leases, solar farm agreements, and retirement village developments.

He goes out of his way to help First Nations businesses and students succeed and thrive, including through his involvement in initiatives such as Independent Indigenous Tourism Operators of Queensland, Birrunga Gallery, and Yalari.

According to his LinkedIn page, Marland has worked on matters involving the sale and purchase of commercial high rise buildings, shopping centres, industrial sites, and hotels; hotel management agreements; real estate funds; mortgagee sales; berthing licence agreements with international cruise liners; and the acquisition and structuring of retirement villages.

New special counsel

Lovel, now a member of the litigation team in Brisbane, has more than 12 years of post-qualified experience. He has handled commercial litigation matters such as franchise disputes, taxation disputes, and property litigation.

His litigation practice has included high-stakes cases. His client base, which is diverse, has covered consumers, small businesses, large franchises, property developers, and public companies.

Abraham, who now belongs to the Melbourne tax team, has gained deep experience in Australia-wide state taxation and dispute resolution, including through handling complex litigation involving the Commissioner of State Revenue.

His work has encompassed a wide range of tax services, including land tax, duties, payroll tax, and congestion levy matters. Clients have relied on him to handle exemption applications, investigations, and appeals.
