HSF takes transaction tax specialist from Allens

Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has taken transaction tax specialist Jay Prasad from Allens to beef up its tax team.

Prasad commences with HSF’s Sydney office next month. He is an expert in corporate M&A, restructures, IPOs, capital management programs and financing transactions.

He has worked with corporates, financial institutions, private equity, and other managed funds. During his tenure at Allens, he tackled the tax aspects of high-profile public and private M&A deals in the private capital, energy and infrastructure sectors.

“We anticipate that this calendar year will finish with a flurry of M&A activity, underpinned by large, complicated M&A arising from private capital deployment. This will necessitate significant tax structuring work which Jay and our tax team are perfectly placed to execute”, said Matthew FitzGerald, managing partner of HSF’s corporate practice in Australia and Asia.

Prasad’s appointment is complemented by the return of former Freehills partner Sarah Dunn.

Dunn rejoins HSF as a consultant on the disputes team. She will concentrate on contentious tax matters, collaborating with litigation partners as well as the broader tax advisory team.

After departing Freehills in 2011, she went on to stints with KPMG and the ATO. At present, she is a part-time NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal member.

HSF Australia tax head Toby Eggleston said that the firm had been beefing up its tax advisory and deal offering for the past two and a half years.

“Our firm’s point of differentiation is our ability to bring together top-tier tax advice that is seamlessly integrated with our market-leading M&A, infrastructure, and disputes capability”, FitzGerald added.

Last month, Arte Golem was announced as the new head of HSF Australia’s disputes practice.
