Kate Barton takes the reins from Elliott Portnoy on 10 November
Former EY global vice chair and CEO of Tax, Law, and People Advisory Services Kate Barton has been announced as Dentons’ new global CEO.
On 10 November, Barton will take the reins from founding global CEO Elliott Portnoy, who steps down after more than a decade in the role. Barton had been with EY for 35 years before making the jump.
“In 12 years, from a standing start, Dentons has become the largest global law firm. The appointment of Kate shows our commitment to being the law firm that helps clients navigate their challenges wherever in the world they are. We continue to grow, and we are looking forward to working with Kate as we help our clients face the future”, said Hayden Wilson, Dentons global vice chair and New Zealand chair.
Wilson added that Dentons’ clients would benefit from Barton’s experience in heading up “a complex global organisation”.
“Dentons has redefined the legal services landscape globally with its pioneering business strategy and client offerings. I am keen to get involved with the firm and excited to work with the New Zealand team to continue to redefine the legal landscape and help our clients achieve success”, said Barton, who confirmed that she would be visiting the firm’s Auckland office in February 2025 with the global board.
Barton and Portnoy will commence the handover period in early September.
