Anchali Anandanayagam believes that women need to be empowered to make their own career decisions
2023 Elite Woman Anchali Anandanayagam is proud to be a role model for ethnic young women.
"I know that as a young woman, it's not often that you come across individuals in leadership positions who truly reflect and connect with you. Having a legal professional who has achieved a position of leadership and can serve as a role model to look up to holds tremendous importance ”, she said.
The Hudson Gavin Martin partner is a star in the TMT field and a key part of the firm’s practice management. She also advocates for mission-oriented business models and values diversity of thought.
“I’m constantly thinking about the challenges for women progressing through the law and how we deal with that”, Anandanayagam said. “I’ve been lucky to have been supported and championed by people throughout my career. The assumptions others make about what women want or don’t want for their careers can be incredibly limiting”.
Thus, Anandanayagam believes that women should get to make their own decisions about careers.
“I think women need to be empowered to make their own decisions about their careers and to communicate that to the people around them, so it is clear what it is they want from their career”, she said. “When my daughter was born, it crystallised my thinking around my career. Children often refocus your priorities, and, for me, it concentrated my focus on being an exceptional lawyer and what I could contribute outside of the law to give back. And I wanted to show my daughter that it can be done”.
