30 law firms are showing the rest of the industry how to put employees first
The 9th batch of 5-Star Employers of Choice have been locked in, with 30 firms showing the rest of the profession what it looks like to have a people-centred culture, especially with talent retention being a major challenge for the legal industry.
“Culture speaks to where you make your investments. We make our investments in having good career programs for learning and development for our employees at every stage of their career”, said Deborah Stonley, director of people and culture at Employer of Choice Maddocks.
Employer of Choice Gilchrist Connell stands up against bigger competitors by offering meaningful benefits.
“Additional benefits, such as extra leave and travel, are offered as forms of reward in addition to our discretionary bonus scheme, which all employees are eligible for”, chief people officer Belinda Cohen said.
As a small firm, Employer of Choice Blackwood Family Lawyers opts to foster close relationships among staff.
“We don’t have that competitive streak internally amongst our staff that you find at a lot of law firms”, practice manager May Hanna said. “The lawyers and the legal assistants work so closely together.”
Employer of Choice Holding Redlich prioritises the mental health of its lawyers.
“It’s important that our leaders understand and know how to deal with what is best practice around mental health, both for themselves and for identifying risk factors in other individuals”, national managing partner Troy Lewis said.
Also joining these firms in the winners’ circle are Hicksons Lawyers and Kennedys.
