Equity Generation Lawyers (EGL) principal lawyer David Hertzberg has been named the 2024 Mahla Pearlman Australian Young Environmental Lawyer of the Year by the Australian Environment and Planning Law Group.

The group is part of the Law Council of Australia’s legal practice section. The award, named for former NSW Land and Environment Court chief judge and past Law Council president Mahla Pearlman AO, is geared towards highlighting young lawyers who logged significant contributions to environmental law as well as to the wider community.

“Over the last few years, David ran a number of cases in the Federal and High Courts which have had a significant impact on different aspects of climate change policy in Australia”, Law Council of Australia President Greg McIntyre said.

Hertzberg has also applied his knowledge of environmental law in various ways.

“The selection of David for this award also recognises the expertise and time he has committed to providing advice to environmental NGOs and community groups and to supporting professional development through his role as a mentor and lecturer in environmental law”, McIntyre said.

Hertzberg is based in Sydney, and commenced with EGL in 2021.
