Fastest-growing law firms in Australia for 2024 unveiled

Australia’s fastest-growing law firms for this year have proven their resilience and have stood out amid the rest in the legal market, thanks to the impressive increases in both their revenues and their number of employees.

Rafton Family Lawyers, one of this year’s Fast Firms, experienced an increase in revenues of 53% and in fee earning staff of 37.5% across its seven offices for the years 2022–23. The firm now offers specialised services in two new practice areas, namely arbitration and mediation and wills and estates.

“Our team is made up of specialist family lawyers and mediators, and that’s why it’s been such a popular service,” Kate Rafton, the firm’s managing partner and chief executive officer, tells Australasian Lawyer. “It’s cost-effective and quick.”

Maddocks, another Fast Firm this year, reported growth in revenue of up to 20%, in partner headcount of 2.2%, and in the number of fee earners of 3.6% over these last 18 months. The firm presently has more than 700 employees.

Maddocks credits its remarkable growth trajectory to its renewed business strategy and vision, its increased emphasis on key sectors, its strengthened focus on planning, and its adoption of AI and other new technologies.

“We refreshed our firm vision to be the Modern Australian Law Firm and are really focusing on engaging with our people and our clients to deliver on this,” says Catherine Saliba, the firm’s chief operating officer. “Innovation and adoption of new technology have played an important part in our strategy and vision.”

In selecting the awardees for 2024, Australasian Lawyer considered the revenue and headcount figures for the 2022 and 2023 calendar years, as well as other growth milestones that the firms were interested in highlighting. Large global firms and small boutiques alike managed to make the final list.

The 21 winning firms are Rafton Family Lawyers, Maddocks, Balance Family Law, BDC Law, Bradley & Bray Lawyers, Chamberlains Law Firm, Hamilton Locke, Jewell Hancock Employment Lawyers, Kennedys, Keypoint Law, LegalVision, Meridian Lawyers, Mills Oakley, Parker Coles Curtis, Piper Alderman, Quantum Law Group, Resolve Divorce, Taurus Legal Management, Thornton+King, Unified Lawyers, and Wotton + Kearney.
