Former US Defense Secretary Mark Esper joins Squire Patton Boggs as senior advisor

Squire Patton Boggs has announced that Dr. Mark T. Esper, former US Secretary of Defense, has joined the global law firm as a senior advisor.

In his new role, Esper will provide strategic guidance to clients on issues related to national security, domestic policy, and foreign affairs.

Mark Ruehlmann, chair and global CEO of Squire Patton Boggs, expressed enthusiasm about Esper’s addition, stating, “Secretary Esper is a decorated public servant and distinguished thought leader with vast experience and global connections that complement our existing team. His expertise will strengthen our ability to address the growing national security challenges our clients face amid the current geopolitical climate.”

During Esper’s tenure as the 27th US Secretary of Defense, he managed the Department of Defense through critical global challenges, including conflicts with Iran, the US military campaign in Afghanistan, and strategic competition with China and Russia. Esper also played a central role in Operation Warp Speed, the US initiative to accelerate the development and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.

In his new advisory position at Squire Patton Boggs, Esper will focus on how national security and economic policies intersect, especially in areas like international trade, technology, and investment policy. His insights are expected to assist multinational corporations, and sovereign states navigate these complex issues.

“Economic security is now national security,” said Ed Newberry, global managing partner for the firm's public policy, compliance, investigatory, and regulatory solutions. “Secretary Esper’s understanding of the global implications of national security policy will be an invaluable asset to our clients.”

Esper praised Squire Patton Boggs as a firm with a rich history and strong leadership in legal and policy matters. He highlighted the increasing importance of national security in today’s business environment, stating, “We are living through an era of great change that has stoked national security ramifications that are rippling through board rooms around the world.”

Esper’s appointment follows several high-profile hires by the firm to expand its capabilities in national security, international trade, and regulatory matters. Recent additions include former US Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary Bridget McGovern and former US ambassador Paul Jones, among others.

Dr. Esper’s private sector experience includes leading government relations at Raytheon Corporation and serving on several public policy and private capital boards. His extensive military service includes earning honours such as the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star as an infantry officer in the 101st airborne division. He is currently the distinguished chair of the Modern War Institute at West Point.
