He co-led Operation Warp Speed to accelerate COVID-19 vaccine development and distribution
Squire Patton Boggs has announced that Dr. Mark T. Esper, former US Secretary of Defense, has joined the global law firm as a senior advisor.
In his new role, Esper will provide strategic guidance to clients on issues related to national security, domestic policy, and foreign affairs.

During Esper’s tenure as the 27th US Secretary of Defense, he managed the Department of Defense through critical global challenges, including conflicts with Iran, the US military campaign in Afghanistan, and strategic competition with China and Russia. Esper also played a central role in Operation Warp Speed, the US initiative to accelerate the development and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.
In his new advisory position at Squire Patton Boggs, Esper will focus on how national security and economic policies intersect, especially in areas like international trade, technology, and investment policy. His insights are expected to assist multinational corporations, and sovereign states navigate these complex issues.

Esper’s appointment follows several high-profile hires by the firm to expand its capabilities in national security, international trade, and regulatory matters. Recent additions include former US Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary Bridget McGovern and former US ambassador Paul Jones, among others.
Dr. Esper’s private sector experience includes leading government relations at Raytheon Corporation and serving on several public policy and private capital boards. His extensive military service includes earning honours such as the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star as an infantry officer in the 101st airborne division. He is currently the distinguished chair of the Modern War Institute at West Point.
