McCullough Robertson names two tax partners

McCullough Robertson has appointed two new tax partners.

David Hughes is joining the firm, while Melinda Peters has been promoted from special counsel, as the independent firm boosts its growing tax practice. The new partners, whose appointments come into effect on 1 November, will support the growing East Coast client base from the firm’s headquarters in Brisbane, it said.

Kristen Podagiel, McCullough Robertson managing partner, said that the appointments signify the growth and consolidation of the tax team. Hughes and Peters, who both have proven track records, complement the practice of existing senior tax partners Duncan Bedford and Damien Clarke, she said.

Hughes moves to the firm from Small, Myers, and Hughes, where he is founder and managing partner. He is one of only five accredited tax law specialists in Queensland. He focuses primarily on private clients and SMEs.

Peters has been with the firm since 2012, rising to special counsel in 2017. She has extensive experience as a tax specialist and duty lawyer, with a focus on corporate taxation, transaction structuring, and tax controversy.

“David brings a depth of tax experience and has been recognised by Doyle’s Guide since 2015 as a Leading Tax Lawyer, as well as being named in Best Lawyers Australia for Tax Law,” said Clarke, the firm’s corporate and commercial head. “Melinda is recognised as a Tax Law Rising Star in Doyle’s Guide. Both have outstanding reputations in their field.”

McCullough Robertson promoted 12 lawyers to senior posts in July. Earlier this year, the firm also appointed a new leader amid a management structure revamp.
