Nexus Law Group expands to Perth and Adelaide

Nexus Law Group has extended its reach to Perth and Adelaide.

The NewLaw firm’s Perth office will be led by group principal Colin Miller and principal Roger Lewis, while the Adelaide branch will be headed by group principal Jeremy Duffy.

Miller specialises in governance, regulatory and compliance matters. He possesses a wealth of knowledge in cross-border transactions, as well as in corporate and commercial law.

He spent over 10 years practising in Asia, and has worked with major law firms both locally and abroad throughout a career spanning more than 30 years. He has also lent his expertise to international financial services firms and fund managers in senior legal and compliance positions; he previously led the legal team at NAB WA.

Lewis has spent more than two decades practising in employment law and workplace health and safety. He has appeared before the Fair Work Commission and the Federal Circuit Court as both solicitor and advocate.

He spent time working for the Fair Work Commission, and has helped employers negotiate enterprise bargaining agreements. He is experienced in the conduct of unfair dismissal and general protection claims.

Nexus founder and CEO Marcus McCarthy said that the appointment of Miller and Lewis as “solid” leaders for the new office marks “an important step in the continued growth of the Nexus practice structure nationally.”

“Over the past few years, we have been focused on building our core management team and carefully growing Nexus through the appointment of the right people at the right time, appointing those who align with our cultural values,” McCarthy said. “We’re proud to have lawyers of such calibre joining our firm and strengthening our service offering for clients nationally. Colin and Roger truly understand the nature of what we are trying to build and will have a great impact on our firm both in Perth and with our group principals in other states.”

Meanwhile, Duffy is a legal technologist who also specialises in commercial property and estate planning. With his background in legaltech, he has developed online document generation platforms EstateWise and YOOConnect, which he has applied in his practice in SA.

Joining Nexus was in line with his interest in global legal innovation and his desire to connect with like-minded lawyers.

“Nexus offered me the platform to implement my vision for a better form of legal practice in South Australia. I believe Nexus offers lawyers the best of both worlds—the flexibility of sole practice with all the benefits and peer support of a large firm,” Duffy said. “Its approach to delivering client-first legal support and practice innovation was of great attraction. Being able to access a national network of experienced specialist peers will also allow me to provide a new level of legal support and expertise to my clients in South Australia.”

McCarthy said he was eager to collaborate with Duffy on the firm’s tech platforms, such as OpenLaw.

“With his technology background, Jeremy is a great asset to Nexus and we are very excited to have him join us in setting up a formal base in Adelaide. This is part of a longstanding plan to implement our business model nationally with great lawyers who are aligned with our cultural values and innovative practice structure,” McCarthy said.

He highlighted the firm’s goal to expand its network carefully with lawyers who “have a passion for doing law in a better way for their clients and in a more rewarding environment for themselves,” he said.

“We are focused on creating a firm of depth, based on the concept of positive innovation for our profession. I am extremely proud that we have delivered something truly unique and positive for lawyers in a difficult legal market,” McCarthy said.
