He currently works as a lawyer at the ACT Legal Aid Office
The ACT Law Society has announced Rob Reis as its president for the 2024-25 term, following his election at the Society’s Annual General Meeting on 14 November.
With nearly four decades of experience in the legal profession, Rob Reis brings a wealth of expertise to the role. He is currently a lawyer at the ACT Legal Aid Office and previously served as the society’s professional standards manager for 17 years, where he was responsible for Chapter 4 investigations into allegations of misconduct by practitioners, including conflicts of interest, breach of confidentiality, trust account misappropriation, and defalcation.
Reis also served as sessional lecturer at the University of Canberra and a tutor in ethics for the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the Australian National University.
As president, Reis is expected to act as the primary representative of the society, advocating on behalf of its members and the council. He will work closely with the society’s chief executive officer, who oversees daily operations. He will also act as chair of the executive committee. His responsibilities include ensuring the effective performance of the council and its committees.
Reis will be supported by vice presidents Vik Sundar and Andrew Allan. Sundar continues in his vice-president role, while Allan assumes the position for the first time, following two years of service on the council.
The society expressed its gratitude to outgoing president Lisa Quilty for her leadership. Quilty has been a member of the council since 2021, serving as vice-president from 2023 before stepping into the role of president in January 2024. She will continue to contribute to the society as immediate past president.
Additionally, in a statement, the society acknowledged the contributions of Georgia Briggs, who concluded her term as vice-president. Briggs served as chair of the council and has been a council member since 2021. Amy Pyett also concluded her first term as a council member.
The ACT Law Society’s Council for 2024-25 includes both returning and newly elected members. The society looks forward to Reis’s leadership as it continues its mission to support its members and uphold professional standards in the legal sector.
