The programme will pay tribute to Ukrainian musicians who died in the conflict
The Sydney Lawyers Orchestra has announced that it will be playing for Ukraine at its 7th annual Christmas concert this year.
Led by conductor Thomas Jones, who is a partner at Bird & Bird, the group will be performing works from Beethoven, Grieg, Henry Tate and Eric Coates in addition to beloved Christmas classics.
“We will pay tribute to Ukrainian people and musicians who have lost their lives in the war, including conductor Yuri Kerpatenko, by playing Grieg’s The Last Spring. The great hymn of Thanksgiving that ends Beethoven’s 6th symphony (which we will also play) reminds us of our common humanity,” Jones told Australasian Lawyer.
The unticketed show is open to all, and it is looking to benefit the Australian Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal. Bird & Bird will be sponsoring the event, which takes place on 21 December at St Stephen’s Uniting Church.
“As a lawyer I feel compelled to speak out against injustice, and as a musician, I look to music to reaffirm our common humanity. That is true of many in the orchestra I suspect,” Jones explained.
The event begins at 6:30pm and ends at 7:30pm.
