The new partner joins the firm’s Brisbane branch
Piper Alderman has grown its restructuring and insolvency partnership to eight with the addition of commercial litigator Joel Shaw.
“I’m excited to join the firm and being a member of a leading national insolvency and restructuring law team. My clients and referrers are extremely supportive of the move and will benefit from the depth of expertise and resources which Piper Alderman provides,” Shaw said.
He is a seasoned practitioner with a focus on insolvency and reconstruction. A member of the Australian Restructuring and Insolvency Turnaround Association, Shaw has advised accountants, company directors, government bodies and creditors in Brisbane.
His clients also include key stakeholders who “have been involved in or impacted by a company’s voluntary administration, receivership or liquidation,” Piper Alderman said. He has guided banks and non-bank lenders as well.
Shaw advises on matters involving security enforcement and unsecured recoveries, as well as formal restructures and insolvency appointments. He has also represented clients in complex commercial disputes related to securities and priorities, consumer protection, contracts, director duties and equity.
He has specific experience handling disputes in the real estate, government, mining and resources, finance and tourism sectors. He has also helped institutional lenders and credit providers to manage volume recoveries.
“Our national restructuring and insolvency team over the last three years has gone from strength to strength with a number of talented partners joining the firm. Joel is a very talented insolvency lawyer and rounds out our offering in this space,” managing partner Tony Britten-Jones said. “We look forward to Joel becoming an integral member of both the national team and our Brisbane partnership.”
Partner Michael Lhuede heads up Piper Alderman’s national restructuring and insolvency practice, which saw Joanne Hardwick, Cheryl Weston, Angelina Kozary and Jonathan Hidayat join the partnership in recent years.
A major promotions round last year also highlighted the effectiveness of the firm’s development programs.
