$10,000 cash scholarship launches

A dispute resolution company has launched a $10,000 professional development scholarship in honour of one New Zealand lawyer.

The board of FairWay Resolution has announced the creation of a $10,000 scholarship - named after dispute resolution stalwart Anne Scragg – to encourage continuing professional development within the dispute resolution profession.

Applications for this year’s scholarship close on 1 August, with anyone within the dispute resolution space – including undergraduate or postgraduate students, new professionals or experienced practitioners – urged to apply.

The scholarship consists of a $10,000 cash contribution towards further study or research, as well as the option of a 12 week working period with FairWay either before or after their course of study or research.

FairWay Resolution chief executive Greg Pollock said the award aims to continue Scragg’s legacy to the profession.

“Anne’s distinguished career reflects an unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence in dispute resolution.

“This scholarship honours that commitment by continuing to foster best practice and new ideas that ensure the profession remains responsive to New Zealand’s changing society and economy.”

Scragg career includes service on the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand Council (from 2006 to 2012) and on the Institute’s Education and Qualifications Committee.

During her time with FairWay in 2006 she worked with the team that set up the Telecommunication Dispute Resolution scheme, and in 2014 she led the team responsible for establishing FairWay’s Family Dispute Resolution service.

"I am absolutely delighted about the new FairWay Resolution Scholarship and deeply honoured that it will bear my name,” Scragg told NZLawyer.

She was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1973. She worked in legal practice for five years before being appointed as an ACC review officer in 1986. She has been a mediator since 2001.
