Acting District Court judge appointed

An Auckland barrister has been appointed an acting District Court judge, based in Manukau.

Auckland barrister Mina Wharepouri has been appointed an acting district court judge with a jury warrant to be based in Manukau, the Law Society reported.

Wharepouri became a barrister sole in 2012 and appeared regularly in district and high court trials.

He began his career at Kensington Swan before moving to Russell McVeagh in 1997.  He was then counsel for several Māori claimants in proceedings in the high court and court of appeal.

Wharepouri worked at Meredith Connell between 2003 and 2011.  He lead district and high court jury trials, also training police in matters relating to evidence and prosecution.

He will be sworn in on 1 June 2016 in Manukau.
