The historic courthouse’s 150th anniversary is being celebrated
The Auckland High Court will open its doors for a public open day on 10 March as the country’s legal industry celebrates the court complex's 150th anniversary.
Guided tours of the modern and historic courtrooms and cells, displays and archive news footages featuring notable cases, and a mock trial are included in the event, the New Zealand Law Society said.
Ngāti Whātua sold the land on which the court was built to Governor William Hobson in 1840. It was originally a Māori pā (Te Reuroa). The building itself is recognised as an Auckland architectural gem. It has been operating on the site since February 1868.
The guided tours, which will run every 20 minutes, will focus on different aspects of the High Court complex. The 30-minute mock trial, which will be repeated throughout the day, is loosely based on a notorious 1930s murder trial.
