Victoria University of Wellington will confer an honorary doctor of laws degree to Governor-General Patsy Reddy.
“Dame Patsy has been an inspiration for women aspiring to leadership in the public and private sectors, and she continues to do so as the Queen’s representative in New Zealand,” said Victoria University chancellor Neville Jordan.
“Prior to her
appointment as New Zealand’s twenty-first governor-general, Dame Patsy established herself as a prominent lawyer, businesswoman and strong advocate for the arts and gender equality. Victoria is proud to celebrate its connection with Dame Patsy and her outstanding achievements in leadership, law, business and the arts,” he added.
The governor-general finished her bachelor of laws and master of laws (first class honours) degrees from Victoria University in 1976 and 1979, respectively. She was a member of the university’s law faculty before joining Watts and Patterson, now
MinterEllisonRuddWatts, in 1982.
She became the firm’s first female partner in 1983. Former MinterEllisonRuddWatts chair
Cathy Quinn recently shared with NZ Lawyer that this achievement was
one of the reasons she joined the firm.
In 1987, she joined Brierly Investments as group legal counsel, and quickly established herself as a highly sought after adviser in law and business. Reddy will be awarded the honorary doctorate during Victoria University’s graduation ceremony on 13 December.
