Lawyer from Christchurch among survivors of yacht sinking in Sicily

A lawyer from Christchurch is among the 15 survivors of the sinking of luxury yacht Bayesian in Sicily on Monday, reported the NZ Herald.

Ayla Ronald was on the yacht as part of the Clifford Chance team that represented British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch in a US fraud case. Lynch was celebrating his acquittal in that case with members of the law firm and his company Invoke Capital.

The yacht was caught up in a tornado that hit the area where it was anchored. Lynch and his daughter are confirmed to have perished in the incident.

Ronald’s father told the Daily Telegraph that his daughter had been helping to coordinate with medics. According to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ronald and Kiwi citizen James Caulfield were the only two New Zealanders on the yacht.

Ronald has been based in London for several years. She is a senior associate at Clifford Chance.
