The sole practitioner has a focus on the food and beverage sector
The New Zealand Government’s nominee for the top post at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) is an Auckland lawyer.
John Barker got the official nod this week in an announcement from Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Agriculture Winston Peters. If successful, he will lead the intergovernmental association, which issues recommendations on viticulture and winemaking practices, in January 2019. OIV has 46 member states and 13 observers.
Barker is currently principal at John Barker Law. From 2004 to 2014, he was the geneal counsel of New Zealand Winegrowers. He has also been the president of the OIV’s law and economy commission.
He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in February 1993 and started his legal career at Simpson Grierson, before moving on to Freehill Hollingdale & Page and the New Zealand Food Safety Authority. He specialises in legal and policy matters in the food and beverage sector.
