The veteran lawyer will be sworn in on 18 November in Wellington and will sit in Manukau.
Wellington barrister Noel Sainsbury who most recently acted for Losi Filipo in his serious assault case has been named a District Court judge.
Sainsburry, who will be sworn in on 18 November 2016 in Wellington, is appointed an Acting District Court Judge with a jury warrant to be based in Manukau, Auckland, according to Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson.
The veteran lawyer has also represented rugby player Julian Save and Hurricanes ex-winger David Smith. He has practiced in the Wellington region since he was admitted in December 1985 and began work with Richardson & McCardle in Upper Hutt.
He moved to Crown prosecution with Luke Cunningham and Clere before joining Bell Gully as a commercial litigator.
In 1993, he went into sole practice as a barrister and has worked primarily in the area of criminal law. He has extensive litigation experience including appearances before the Supreme Court and Privy Council.
Sainsbury is a member of the Wellington Crown Prosecution Panel although he predominantly acts as defence counsel. He is currently the President of the Criminal Bar Association, the first president from outside Auckland.
