Public law specialist joins the independent bar

Andrew Butler will be joining Thorndon Chambers in September.

The public law specialist is retiring from Russell McVeagh, where he has been a partner for a decade. He is the current chair of the firm’s ethics committee.

Butler was previously Crown Counsel at the Crown Law Office in Wellington and also a senior lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington.

Part of the top-tier firm’s litigation team, he has extensive trial and appellate experience, regularly appearing for clients before the High Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court.

He is widely recognised for his expertise in the areas of public law, human rights protection, judicial review, and trusts and equity.

Butler has been the chair of the New Zealand Law Foundation since 2013. He is also a convenor of the New Zealand Law Society’s Human Rights and Privacy Committee.
