Senior lawyers are being encouraged by the
Ministry of Justice to apply for the chairpersonship of the performance review committee that covers legal aid lawyers.
The committee may be approached by the ministry about matters where it believes a lawyer failed to comply with the Legal Services Act 2011, or regulations, or any condition of his or her approval, and that the failure, if proven, merits cancelling or modifying the lawyer’s approval to provide legal aid services. The committee provides its recommendations to the secretary for justice.
The candidate must have at least seven years’ legal experience; demonstrated proficiency in various areas of law; strong understanding of lawyers’ professional obligations; interest in legal ethics; and experience in, or knowledge of, providing legal aid services or specified legal services.
Approval to provide legal aid services is not required, but it is desired that the senior lawyer have a working knowledge of financial management in the state sector.
Applicants need to submit a CV, a valid certificate of standing, and a cover letter to
