Whanganui lawyer in ICU following alleged assault

Whanganui lawyer Mark Bullock has been languishing in Wellington Hospital’s intensive care unit following an alleged assault.

On 23 April, the lawyer was found severely injured at 2am by Whanganui police at the intersection of Taupō Quay and Victoria Ave after they were notified that an attack had happened in the area. According to the NZ Herald, Bullock was quickly transferred to the Wellington Hospital the same day.

The Whanganui Chronicle reported on Friday that Bullock’s condition had stabilised, though he remain in the ICU.

As per the Herald, Villiome Nuku Kuruyabaki, a 23-year-old forestry worker, was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent to injure. He went before the Whanganui District Court registrar on last Tuesday and entered no plea.

Defence lawyer Mark Mcghie sought disclosure from law enforcement, and successfully obtained a three-week remand on bail for Kuruyabaki. The worker is set to enter a plea on his next appearance on 17 May,.

While on remand, a 24-hour curfew has been imposed on Kuruyabaki except while at work. He has also been forbidden from contacting Bullock, consuming alcohol, entering licenced premises and applying for a passport.
