Event aims to put harassment in the past

Hollywood kickstarted a revolution with the #metoo campaign, giving women the much-needed chance to speak out against sexism and harassment – but can the same be said for the legal sector?
The stats don’t look pretty. One in three NZ female lawyers claim to have been sexually harassed at work; and 33 percent of them said they had been subjected to ‘crude behaviour’ that they found upsetting or offensive, according to recent reports.
This is one of the big issues under the spotlight at Auckland’s upcoming Women in Law Summit – a powerful industry event from NZ Lawyer where high-profile thought-leaders will tackle a packed agenda of topics relating to career advancement for women in law.
In the panel discussion ‘Eradicating sexual harassment in the legal profession’, a selection of industry veterans will discuss how to acknowledge sexual harassment and give victims a voice, how to identify an abuse of power and react appropriately, examining the subtleties of sexual harassment, making a disciplinary complaint and how firms can create a zero tolerance culture towards inappropriate behavior.
The Women in Law summit takes place at the Cordis Auckland on Tuesday 18 September.
